Westies are fun loving and spirited, and have a sense of humor. There is no question that the West Highland White Terrier is a versatile and remarkable breed. To know more about them

1) Attend Westie shows
2) Westie Club meetings
3) Local kennel club meetings
4) Talk with local breeders and Westie owners.
5) Have patience and never buy impulsively …

Westies are beautiful animals which make good family pets and are good earth dogs. Westies can also work as hearing dogs, therapy dogs and tracking dogs.

What Do Westie puppies cost?

The price of a companion quality Westie puppy varies significantly depending on where you live. The cost averages less than $100 per year, which is not a lot compared to the annual maintenance cost of a Westie.

Westies have small litters (average is 3.5 puppies per litter). Stud fees, shipping, pre-breeding tests, veterinary expenses, occasional Caesarian sections, vaccinations, feeding, and toys are all costly.

Money from the sale of puppies does not cover all of these expenses, let alone the time invested for good care and socialization. Young adults and rescued Westies cost considerably less and usually make wonderful pets.

Do Westies Make Good Gifts?

Many people try to buy puppies as Christmas gifts for children or other family members. Most breeders do not recommend this. A better idea is to give Westie related gifts, leashes, grooming tools and then bring your puppy home when all the excitement has died down.

It is generally not a good idea to surprise someone with a living, breathing gift, even if you are positive that the individual wants a puppy and a Westie puppy in particular. That individual should get the joy of picking out his/her own puppy or young adult. A book with lots of pictures or a toy Westie make a wonderful presentation and can also be beautifully gift wrapped too.

Weaning and Feeding Pups:

Good breeders will make sure their pups go to new homes with a small supply of the food they are used to, plus fairly detailed instructions about times and amounts to feed the pup. Ask about what brand of Westie food they use and why they use that particular one. If they make their own Westie food, ask them about the ingredients and why they have included each one.

Socializing your Puppies Before They Go To New Homes:

A good breeder will ensure that pups learn to interact with humans in different age brackets, especially children. They will often invite neighbors children in to play with the pups, but under supervision.

Pups should also be socialized to deal with new situations although for health reasons, it is risky to take a puppy out in public until it has had its second set of shots. Ways to prepare pups to dealing with new situations is to put them into different locations, or give them new and odd toys.

Choosing a Male or Female:

Temperamentally, there is very little difference between sexes in Westies. Each has its pros and cons. There is a crossover and always the exception to the rule. Spayed and neutered animals do not have many of the negative characteristics of their sex.

Males can be easily trained to use an urination post in the garden, thus keeping the garden healthy and odor free. Many fanciers find the males to be more affectionate. Females are slightly smaller, are not as strong, and are therefore easier to walk and carry.

Choosing a Puppy or Adult Westie:

The advantage of getting a puppy; aside from its irresistible cutenessis; is that you can raise it by yourself from the beginning, and participate in its training and socialization every step of the way.

The disadvantage is that training a puppy requires a great deal of time and patience. Busy families should keep in mind that puppies cannot be left alone for more than a few hours at a time. They need plenty of trips outside, frequent meals, and lots of interaction with people.

Adult Westies, whether purchased directly from a breeder or adopted from a rescue group, can be ideal for people who want a Westie with fewer needs. Mature Westies tend to be calmer; some are already house-trained and know some basic obedience.

The key to the decision is the lifestyle of the adoptive household. If there are lots of people around, and they are able to keep a puppy active and clean up after it, then a puppy may be the best choice.

However, if there are constraints on cleaning up, exercising or lengths of time the Westie must be alone, an older pup or adult Westie may be better choice.

Cancer, for instance, strikes anyone of any age,
and of any race or social background.  Cancer will
find you whether you lead a healthy or unhealthy
lifestyle; whether you’re physically fit or out of
shape; whether you exercise regularly or are a
couch potato; whether you’re rich or poor, male or
female; whether you’re a vegetarian, pescetarian
or meat lover; and whether you’re an adult,
adolescent or child.

DID YOU KNOW… that 1 out of every 3 adults in
America already has cancer?  But most of them
don’t know it yet because the cancer is
undiagnosed and undetected.  According to the
American Cancer Society, there’s a 41% probability
that an individual, male or female, will develop
cancer in his or her lifetime (or die from it).
Additionally, every human being has cancer cells
existing in the body which are just seeking a
low-oxygen environment where they can multiply
into the full-blown disease.

What if you could reduce your chance of getting cancer
from 41% to zero?  What if you completely removed
all probability that you’ll ever get ANY disease,
for that matter?  And what if you had a way of
curing any disease that you might already have?

“Is that really possible?” you ask.

The answer is a resounding “Yes!”

But you can’t do it simply by eating a healthy diet, or
even by becoming a vegetarian.  Linda McCartney,
the late wife of Paul McCartney was a life-long
vegetarian, who not only campaigned for vegetarianism,
but also wrote a book on vegetarian cooking and
produced a line of frozen vegetarian meals.  Yet,
despite her healthy eating, she died of breast cancer
at the age of 56.  That’s 20 years ahead of the average
life expectancy of American women.

And you can’t become immune from disease simply
by exercising or becoming physically fit.  Some of
the greatest athletes of our time, including 7-time
Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong, Olympic
ice skating champions Scott Hamilton and Peggy
Fleming, and basketball star Magic Johnson, have all
been victims of cancer or HIV.

And no, neither can you prevent or cure disease by
popping a variety of nutrients, super “nutraceuticals,”
vitamins and minerals either.

The absolute best way to eradicate disease from your
life is by supplying the cells and tissues of your body
with its most essential element – and that’s oxygen.

Why?

Because even though your body may need an array of
different elements and nutrients such as CoQ10,
magnesium, Omega-3 fatty acids and the like, only
oxygen is in such critical demand that an insufficient
supply makes the body develop diseases — and it absence
causes the body to die within minutes.

Oxygen creates an environment in the body that enables
the body to CURE ITSELF of virtually all diseases
characterized by viruses, harmful bacteria, toxins,
disease microorganisms and pathogens, including but
not limited to cancer, AIDS, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s
Disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple
sclerosis, heart disease, ulcers, asthma and many other
types of diseases, including the flu.

But the important key to remember is that
sufficient amounts of oxygen need to be supplied
at the CELLULAR level.  Unless oxygen is delivered
to the cells and tissues of the body, it cannot do
a good job at creating an environment in the body
that is uninhabitable by disease.

Only the simple therapy described in “The One-Minute
Cure” effectively moves oxygen atoms from the
bloodstream to the cells to a dramatically greater
degree than is usually reached by all other means.
That’s why this one-minute cure has been administered
by over 15,000 European doctors, naturopaths and health
practitioners to millions of patients to cure practically
every disease known to man.

They have yet to find a disease that does NOT respond
well to this one-minute cure.  When you self-administer
the easy, painless therapy at home in less than 1 minute,
it instantly floods your cells and tissues with oxygen.  All
disease microorganisms, viruses, microbes and pathogens
die in high-oxygen environments because they are
ANAEROBIC (i.e., they seek out and thrive in
low-oxygen environments).

Your healthy cells, on the other hand, are AEROBIC, which
means that they not only thrive but become
rejuvenated and revitalized in the presence of oxygen,
thereby promoting vibrant health.

All told, the one-minute cure is your best bet for
reducing your chances of getting cancer (or any other
disease) down to ZERO – and preventing disease from
invading your body, to begin with.

In this world where disease is so prevalent, and
practically no one escapes disease, you owe it to
yourself to discover the one-minute solution to
all your health fears and worries.  Disease doesn’t have
to scare you anymore, nor does it have to make you
feel helpless, or worse, dependent on expensive
drugs, procedures and therapies offered by
organized medicine.

Virtually All Diseases.” Go to:

mechanism of action as interferon — without producing
side effects — and why it is now being used as an
inexpensive alternative to interferon for the treatment
of Multiple Sclerosis — see page 66

* How this simple therapy causes your body to cure itself
of cancer — even in cases when the disease wasn’t caught
early, and even if it’s a late-stage cancer — see page 44

* Keep your pets healthy, too – Administering this natural
oxygenating substance in the drinking water of your dog,
cat, horse or other pets cures everything from heartworms
to parasites to feline leukemia — without the use of pet
medications.  It has even been given to race horses
to improve endurance and shorten recovery times after
races. — see page 93

The word Papillon is French for “butterfly.” The Papillon was named for its erect butterflylike ears that frame its face. Apparently the Papillon was developed in France during the sixteenth century from a small, long-eared dog called the Belgian Spaniel or Dwarf Spaniel. At the time the spaniels were popular in Spain, Italy and France. Down-ear and erect-ear types exist today and are judged by the same breed standards in AKC shows.

The diminutive breed was popular with European landed gentry and royal courts’ ladies for many years before the mutation created the Papillon known today. The petite Papillon was designed to be a decorative lapdog. It has been reported that Madame Pompadour and Marie Antoinette owned Papillons. Ownership today is not limited to the upper class.

Papillons are excellent companions. They are hardier than they appear and are comfortable in all climates. They love the outdoors. The Papillon probably prefers to romp in the yard or take a leashed walk and rather would not be picked up and held. The Papillon can socialize with other small pets and children who have been properly instructed in small dog care.

Personality

A Papillon is lively, intelligent and loves to learn. It is loving and loveable, but is sometimes suspicious of strangers and prefers the company of its family. The Papillon is best trained with gentleness and consistency. He wants to please his owners and will look to you for rewards both verbal and edible. The Papillon is usually well represented in obedience classes and often surpasses larger dogs in learning ability. The Papillon also makes an excellent therapy or visitation dog after minimal obedience training.

Appearance

The Papillon stands 8 to 11 inches tall and weighs about 9 to 10 pounds. The Papillon is has a dainty and refined appearance with a fine bone structure. His legs are straight and feet are elongated. Its eyes are dark and not bulgy. The lip margins, nose rubber and eyelid rims are black. The tail is long, high set, and arched over the body.

Grooming

The coat is long, fine, silky and requires regular brushing. The Papillon does not have an undercoat. The coat falls flat on the back and sides with a profuse frill on the chest. It is short and close on the skull, muzzle and front legs. The rear of the forelegs, tail and thighs are covered with long hair. The Papillon’s coat is easy to maintain with weekly brushing. You will need a plastic pin brush or bristle brush and comb. You can use a special whitening shampoo to make the coat shine.

Brush through the coat with a pin brush, then comb with a medium-toothed comb.

Loosing a pet is a horrifying experience. Not one word can describe the feeling of loss and grief associated with having to say goodbye forever to your pet. But those who have managed to go through this experience state that there are ways to ease the pain.
– Allow time to pass: In order to accept the inevitable, your mind needs some time to deal with the stress of having to say goodbye to your beloved pet. Whether your pet died from natural or unnatural causes you have to allow some time to pass and heal.
– Talk to people: Do not keep everything locked inside. Find the courage to speak about your feelings of loss to friends and relatives, or consider joining a therapy group. People that have gone through this experience and managed to reestablish their life’s balance believe in the healing process of expressing your emotions. Do not for one moment feel embarrassed or that you annoy people with your mourning mind-set. It is perfectly normal to converse your sorrow. By talking about them, you will find comfort not only because people may be able to state the words you need to listen, but because you will realize that they are there to listen and support you.
– Have a closure: Some people that have lost their pets believe that it is important for someone to experience some kind of closure. Saying goodbye to those we love is tremendously hard. By scheduling a day to mourn your pet, you will be able to cope with its loss easier. When the sadness you feel is expressed, the healing process begins. Do not get discouraged if others think this is a bad idea. The important thing is to do what you believe is good for you.
– Invest in a hobby: Although you might consider this as a weird idea, experts state that it is crucial for the mourner to find some time to find a new interest. By allocating the excess energy to something that pleases-even temporarily-the person that suffers, instead of turning against oneself, the mourner will discover a new path though which he or she can expedite the healing process. For instance, buy a canvas and some brushes and begin painting. Select a destination you have never visited and travel. If you always wanted to learn a music instrument, this might be the time to begin. In general, do not allow the feelings of guilt and resentment affect your life’s choices. Death is part of life; accept it, cherish the moments you shared with your pet and try to move on. It might seem impossible, but your pet would want you to try to be happy again.

There’s nothing that relieves stress and makes us laugh like watching a new puppy chasing a ball on wobbly legs. And what fun to play ‘tug of war’ with a favorite toy! Just having your dog in your lap to pet and cuddle brings soothing relaxation.

Maybe there’s more to the phrase “man’s best friend” that we realize.

For years care givers have been inviting pets into nursing homes. Not only does this promote social interaction for the residents as they pet and talk to their furry friend, but they also become less withdrawn and begin talking to the other residents even after their pet’s visit is over. This seems to help break the cycle of loneliness and depression that many of them feel. And stroking a dog or cat can actually reduce a person’s blood pressure! Petting a dog encourages the use of hands and arms and encourages stretching and turning movements, especially if your visiting dog is a bit active. What a wonderful gift a dog can offer, but the dog benefits, too, by receiving loving affection in return.

For those who would like to work with such a program, either with your own dog or with dogs provided by a service, the first rule is that visiting dogs must be social. The whole idea is to facilitate positive interaction between the dog and the people who are visited by them. If the dog doesn’t seem eager to participate, the interaction will be less than ideal, and the rejection felt by the person could be more harmful than no visit at all. They truly need to feel that the dog accepts them and likes them. When selecting a dog for one of these programs, look for one that is calm, friendly and tolerant. The visit shouldn’t be forced on the person or the dog. Successful visits should be pleasurable for both.

Because of the successful results with nursing home residents, this concept has expanded to hospitals, where many studies are now exploring the health benefits of association with companion animals. Pet-facilitated therapy (PFT) is now being used often as a treatment method for patients with physical and emotional problems.

The Red Cross has begun using dogs and other animals following traumatic events to help people feel better and have something to help divert their attention from their suffering. Children especially can benefit from having a puppy to play with. It temporarily takes the place of a pet that may have been left behind until they can be reunited. Playing with volunteer animals gives people a break from their mental and physical stress and makes them more able to cope with what they are going through.

Children love animals of all kinds – particularly dogs. One amazing study is finding that dogs play a big part in helping children who are learning to use prosthetic arms and legs. They can use their new arm to brush and groom a dog, which helps them learn to grasp objects and become more confident with their ability to use their new limb. For those with a new leg, playing ball with a dog helps them to improve their balance and maneuverability. The emotional therapy is priceless, too. The children begin to gain self-confidence again and learn to focus on their abilities rather than their limitations. In return, the dog learns to interact with children and receives some TLC, too.

For autistic and mentally disabled children, health workers and teachers are discovering that playing with dogs motivates them to learn and develop new skills and try new things. They find ways to interact with the world around them that didn’t exist before.

But what if someone is feeling a bit down and depressed, and they aren’t in a situation where a companion dog is part of their therapy. There are lots of options. A visit to the local animal shelter may find them adopting a dog who has that irresistible ‘please take me home with you’ look. What a joy for both the dog and the new owner.

If having a dog isn’t the best solution, the animal shelters and local veterinarians love to have volunteers to walk the dogs and pet them. Maybe a neighbor travels a lot or works long hours. They would love to have someone take their dog for a walk. Visit a local dog park and laugh as the dogs execute their playful antics. Find a doggie frisbee contest to watch the amazing skills of these highly trained dogs. Or just visit a friend who has a dog that’s cute and friendly. The possibilities are endless.

Pet therapy works because dogs and other animals create joy in people’s lives, and they help them to enjoy that life more. Dogs are non-judgmental and willingly provide exercise, play and laughter. So get healthy – play with your dog and pet them often. They truly are “man’s best friend.”
