Animal Friends operates a large pet therapy program in the Pittsburgh area which allows patients in nursing homes, adult care facilities, hospitals, children's homes and even homebound individuals to receive the therapeutic effects of human-animal interaction. Pet therapy is conducted almost exclusively by trained shelter volunteers, and all animals are approved prior to their visits. The beneficial health effects of pet therapy are well documented, and people who own pets even tend to live longer lives.

CATRA, the Capital Area Therapeutic Riding Association, is a nonprofit organization providing recreational and therapeutic horseback riding to physically and mentally-challenged people of all ages. The facility is located at 168 Station Road in Grantville, Pennsylvania, just off I-81 north of Harrisburg. Aside from the owners, Ben and Shirley Nolt, the program is run completely by volunteers, who do everything from assisting at lessons to cleaning stalls, mowing grass, and every sort of barn and office work. We offer lessons to over 100 riders every week, each of whom require from 1 to 4 volunteer assistants per lesson. Our volunteer needs are enormous! CATRA volunteers work hard, but we have a lot of fun, and we get the satisfaction of doing work that is worth while and fulfilling. CATRA is a very special place where everyone is accepted equally. Riders at CATRA range in age from 18 months to on into their 70s. Riders may have Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy, Head Trauma, Learning Disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorder and Autism.
