Equest Therapeutic Riding Center

www.equestmaine.org

Equest is a 501(c)(3) non-profit therapeutic horseback riding program founded in 1998 to serve children and adults with disabilities in York County, Maine. Our aim is to foster positive horse and human interaction within an experiential learning environment in order to facilitate physical, mental, and emotional well being. Equest is an Operating Center of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA). We offer a safe, inclusive and professional program to address a variety of challenges both seen and unseen. With the help of trained therapy horses and a team of instructors, therapists and volunteers, students are taught the foundations of equine behavior, horse care and horsemanship skills appropriate for their age, needs and level of ability. Physical and occupational therapists, retained for consultation and evaluation, work with instructors and primary caregivers to develop individualized riding plans with educational, recreational and therapeutic goals.

Hearts & Horses Therapeutic Riding Center
63 Justin Merrill Road, Buxton, ME 04093
Contact Person: Stephanie Keene, Executive Director
www.heartsnhorses.org

Hearts & Horses Therapeutic Riding Center is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that was founded on the belief that experiencing and riding horses can significantly improve the lives of individuals with physical, emotional, and developmental disabilities.

For our physically challenged riders, therapeutic riding improves balance, muscle tone, range of motion and strength. Our riders who are working through emotional difficulties quickly learn to understand their horses, a first step in understanding themselves. Our riders with learning disabilities and cognitive challenges benefit from the sensory integration provided through the horse. All of our riders develop an increase in concentration, self-perception and sense of empowerment.

We would love to introduce you to the healing world of therapeutic horseback riding. Please visit our website for more detail on the programs we offer and directions to our facility or contact us at the information listed above. Hearts and Horses is an affiliated member of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA).
